Unique styles, anime und feedback. posted Aug 10th 2009, 4:31PM

Mood: Squiggly

Seems to be a couple of things that keeps coming back in art communities.

c: I thought after 2 years it'd be nice to post another journal. This is a long one so be warned. Just my thoughts on certain things.

Whenever I see a question such as "What makes a good artist" I see alot of answers saying something along the lines of 'Original and a unique style.' But is that really what makes a good artist? D: Sometimes it looks more like an auto-reply to that question. Why do people want to get a unique style so bad? "There's a crapload of art going around in the world and if yours is mediocre it will drown. You need to stand out." Is what my teacher said.

Personally I don't believe in a 'unique' style myself. There have been alot of styles created ever since the exsistance of art. And that goes 100's of years back! (When art became a definition.)
With each style I see nowadays I can say "Hey, that reminds me of <insert style or cartoon> but then more drawn in this way."
I don't call that 'unique' really ;x It's like an exsisting art style with your own twist. If I decide to buy a Mazda and wreck of it's roof to be different from others..It's still a Mazda.(no copyright infridgment intented here.) It's just a bit colder in the winter. D: And you're always influenced with some media you've seen in the past that made you decide to draw.

That leads me to the next part c: Anime.

I can hear hisses of some people now already. It kinda makes me sad or something? Not emo sad. Just wondering. Because anime splits in way more categories than I can probably name. Okay, lots of them have big eyes. Same that Western style cartoon heroes have extremely detailed muscle builds.

So what devides the two? I've seen alot of American series where the characters have huge eyes, tiny noses and cute appearance as well. (Hurr, it can apply for Bugs Bunny.) But there are also alot of anime which is more realistic (Animatrix has a couple of realistic drawn ones.) And not all anime are about magical girls that needs to find 7 balls to make her wish come true with 120 creatures at her side.

So I wonder if people that bash on anime are aware of that too.

Which brings me to the last part, comments and feedback.

So some people bash on anime because it's not original or whatever their reason is.
I support constructive feedback. But it seems that the only people who dare to open their mouth are out to insult the others in the process as well. Of course there are always exceptions.

I've looked at the definition of art. In short "Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions."

So yeah, what calls out reactions or emotions. Even with fanart I get emotions. It doesn't need to have a unique style for me to like it. Even recolors of characters. I don't really like them, but I can imagine the fanbase likes it. And isn't that what matters in the end? Entertainment for your chosen audience?

So coming back to the 'Sea of crapload art', I think an important part is the way you display your skills. No matter how 'unique' your style is, if you can't portrait it well it'll fade away against the better conveyed pieces. "Better a good copied style than your own style that's utterly crap." Another thing my teacher said. I don't really care what you think of that man about now but I think it was funny.

Well, this is just how I see things in the art world. c: Bottomline is that people should think before acting. Then the world would be a much better place -happy music-
